Present collection and disposal system

State investment program management and implementation unit (SIPMIU) under UD&PA deptt. Look after and deals with this assisted project. Consultation and awareness of the project is being done and on-going.

Discussion on city solid waste management

M/S Gherzi Eastern Limited is engaged as Design Supervision and Monitoring Consultant (DSMC)  to assist SIPMIU in implementing the project. Under the guidance of Project Director SIPMIU, consultant had prepared sub project appraisal report (SAR) which is the first requirement before DPR and the same was already submitted to Govt. of India (MOUD).

The urgent improvement needs identified based on situation assessment and consultations included the following: (i) improvement of collection efficiencies, both primary and secondary (ii) improvements in the existing system for transportation of wastes, and (iii) treatment and disposal of wastes in accordance with SWHR –2000. The Project scope would then comprise of following provisions:

  • An environmental impact study of the disposal sites;
  • A detailed feasibility study of composting operations, with the objective of attracting a private sector operator; and construction of a compost plant of 50 mtpd capacity which can be augmented in capacity in future years to 100 mtpd.
  • Preparation of community awareness materials and implementation of a community awareness and consultation campaign through NGOs, CBOs, schools and churches.
  • Provision of primary collection system and equipments.
  • Improvement of collection vehicles (existing).
  • Construction of garage and parking for vehicles.
  • Construction of sanitary landfill and leatche collection tank.
  • Provision of equipments for disposal site.
  • Construction of site office, sale emporium, godown, reservoir, Weight Bridge, watchman shed, inters connecting road etc. including lightning of the area.
  • Provision of 50mtd composting plant including site development of the area.

Tuirial existing site with adjacent extension of the area at the northern site by land acquisition is selected for disposal site. Preparation of detail project report (DPR) is expected to complete by March 2011.
